Evangelistic symbols. The four Evangelists are Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, the authors of the Gospels. They are often represented in imagery by their symbols. Most commonly these are a man for Matthew, a lion for Mark, an ox for Luke and an eagle for John. The symbols are drawn from the Book of Revelation, chapter 4. Most commonly, these symbols are found winged, especially on fonts, but also on screens and stained glass. Interestingly, the eagle as a symbol for John is unusual on screens in Norfolk. More usually, he is symbolised by a poisoned chalice.
