Spandrels. When an arch has been squared off, or the inside of a right-angle joined by an inward curve, the space inside is called a spandrel. For instance, the area above a doorway into a porch, or within the hammer on a hammerbeam roof. They are often decorated with Angels, mythical beasts and symbols.
