Norfolk
Churches
by H Munro Cautley. Seminal
work, the first proper survey of all the medieval Norfolk
churches, conducted by architect Munro Cautley in the
years immediately after the war. A gazeteer follows the
splendid subject introductions, and there are hundreds of
black and white photographs. A beautiful book, long out
of print but easily available. See this book on
amazon.co.uk. A Popular Guide to Norfolk Place Names by James Rye. Efficient little book with the original meanings of Norfolk parish names. In print, £4.95 on amazon.co.uk Norfolk and Suffolk by MR James. An enjoyable account of MR James tour of the two counties in the 1930s, including detailed descriptions of screens, fonts, etc. In print, £20 on amazon.co.uk The King's England: Norfolk by Arthur Mee. Barmy Arthur's books are always good for a laugh, and this is no exception. At this distance, Mee's flowery evocation of a lost England (did it ever exist?) can be moving as much as mawkish. Out of print, but easily and cheaply available. See this book on amazon.co.uk
